The container ship Mercosul Fortaleza, operated by CMA CGM, ran aground on the afternoon of October 24 while en route from the port of Suape to the port of Macapa, in the Amazon River near Óbidos, Brazil.

The vessel became stranded in a gully next to the riverbank, surrounded by lush vegetation.

Initial reports indicate that there have been no reports of injuries or environmental pollution at this time. Authorities are the scene to assess any potential environmental risks and check for signs of fuel or cargo leakage.

Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the grounding.

The Mercosul Fortaleza is a container ship built in 2017 and flies the Brazilian flag. The vessel is 185.97 meters long 34.88 meters wide.

According to the data, the Mercosul Fortaleza container ship is a self-owned vessel incorporated into CMA C's fleet following the acquisition of the Brazilian domestic container shipping company Mercosul Line. It is not a vessel using space under a slot charter agreement with another company. CMAGM completed its acquisition of Mercosul Line in 2017, which enhanced the shipping company's service capabilities in Brazil and South America, particularly in coastal transport "door-to-door" services.

Mercosul Line was founded in 1996 and acquired by Maersk in 2006, was transferred to CMA CGM in 2017.
