On October 25, 2025, the Guangzhou Maritime Search and Rescue Center received a report that around 19:55, a bulk carrier sank after colliding with an incoming container ship near the Ma Youshi lightship in the Lingding Channel while en from Guangzhou to Shanghai.
According to relevant information, the two vessels involved in the incident are the bulk carrier "Haili 5" and the container shipWan Hai A17".
Wan Hai Shipping stated that after the collision, its container ship immediately activated emergency measures, including deploying life rings and emergency devices, and dispatched lifeboats to carry out rescue operations. According to the company's statement, the 8,000-ton bulk carrier "Haili5" lost power at the time of the accident.
Based on the information on Wan Hai's official website, the Wan Hai A17 is on the Asia-Middle East (AM1) service, having previously called at Qingdao and Shanghai, and was sailing from Ningbo to Nanhai at the of the incident.
The Wan Hai A17 is one of the largest ship types under Wan Hai Shipping, with a container capacity of up to 3,100 TEU, making it the tenth vessel in a series built by Samsung Heavy Industries. The ship was delivered in August 2024, and Wanai Shipping emphasized at the time that the series of vessels had obtained the "Smart Ship Mark" certification, capable of collecting real-time data on the ship's navigation and operation status of equipment using various monitoring systems and communication devices to ensure safe and reliable maritime transport services.
After the accident, relevant departments quickly activated emergency response mechanisms, dispatched maritime air rescue forces to carry out search and rescue operations, and implemented temporary traffic control measures on the accident-prone waterway. Passing vessels were required to maintain a safe distance strictly comply with the vessel traffic service system (VTS) and patrol instructions. At present, search and rescue operations are still ongoing.
So far, there is no report any damage to the container ship "Wan Hai A17" in this collision.
