Maersk Joins 'Pink Corridor' Study of Nuclear-Powered Container Route Between US and UK

The shipping industry is taking a fresh look at nuclear-powered containerships. On September 2, Lloyd’s Register (LR), Maersk, the Port of Charleston in the United States, and the Port of Felixstowe in the United Kingdom announced the launch of the “Pink Corridor” project. The project will examine the requirements for a theoretical nuclear-powered container service between Charleston and Felixstowe, including those governing commercial port calls and transatlantic operations. It remains at the conceptual stage. No nuclear-powered container service has been announced, and no vessel design or start date has been confirmed.

What Will the Pink Corridor Project Examine?

 

The project is not intended to begin the immediate construction of a nuclear-powered containership. Instead, it will address a more practical question: if nuclear-powered containerships enter commercial service in the future, will they be able to call at ports, load and discharge cargo, and operate within the existing commercial shipping system?

 

The study will cover port access, ship safety and security, nuclear safeguards, cyber resilience, emergency response, insurance, and the alignment of maritime and nuclear regulatory requirements. LR said the first phase would assess the requirements for future nuclear-powered vessels operating on the theoretical route. Its findings will help define the scope of any subsequent work on engineering, regulation, legislation, security, and safeguards.

 

Grounding the study in Charleston and Felixstowe gives it a practical commercial context. Located on the US East Coast and in the United Kingdom, respectively, the two ports provide a specific transatlantic shipping scenario in which the partners can assess the regulatory and safety requirements that nuclear-powered containerships may face when calling at ports and entering commercial service.


 

Why Is Maersk Continuing to Explore Nuclear-Powered Containerships?

 

The shipping industry’s renewed interest in nuclear power is closely linked to mounting pressure to decarbonize. Compared with conventional marine fuels, nuclear power offers high energy density and long operating cycles. If the technology can meet the safety and regulatory requirements of commercial shipping, it could theoretically provide a long-term, low-carbon propulsion option for oceangoing vessels.

 

Maersk has previously taken part in related research. In June, Maersk, Lloyd’s Register, CORE POWER, and the Port of Rotterdam worked together on a study examining port calls by nuclear-powered commercial vessels in Rotterdam. The study also covered regulation, safety, emergency response, insurance, and public engagement. The industry’s focus is gradually shifting from whether nuclear-powered ships can be built to whether they can be integrated into commercial shipping.

 

The Pink Corridor project therefore goes beyond an assessment of nuclear propulsion technology. It brings vessels, ports, regulators, insurers, and emergency response systems together within a single commercial shipping scenario.

 

How Far Are Nuclear-Powered Containerships from Commercial Operation?

 

For now, commercial operation remains some way off. The Pink Corridor is an early-stage research project. No specific nuclear-powered containership design has been announced, and there are no confirmed construction or service plans. Before commercial operations can begin, the industry would still need to address port access, nuclear safety, regulatory coordination, insurance liability, emergency response, and public acceptance.

 

For cargo owners and freight forwarders, the study does not require any changes to current booking or shipping arrangements in the near term. No nuclear-powered containership is operating on the route, nor are existing UK–US container services being replaced. The key developments to watch will be whether the project moves into vessel design, regulatory development, or a phase involving additional ports.

 

From an industry perspective, the Pink Corridor is best viewed as an early assessment of infrastructure and regulatory readiness ahead of any commercial deployment. If nuclear-powered merchant ships are eventually to enter the container shipping market, acceptance by ports and regulators may prove more important than advances in propulsion technology alone.
