A Cargo Ship Suffered a Steering Failure in an Important Waterway, Causing a Brief Interruption in Traffic.

On December 30, the general cargo ship Ere M, flying the flag of Liberia, experienced a steering malfunction near the of Beşiktaş, Turkey, causing the vessel to begin a dangerous drift. No casualties were reported.


The incident occurred at around 7:50 am. local time, when the general cargo ship, which was passing through the Bosphorus Strait, suddenly lost steering control and began to drift towards the coastline. It to a halt just a few meters from a pier in the Beşiktaş district, causing concern among the local residents.


At the time of the incident, the was en route from Novorossiysk, Russia to Hatay, Turkey. Subsequently, the vessel began to move backward before regaining control.


The crew board managed to rectify the steering malfunction. Under the coordination of the maritime authorities, the coastal security tugboat escorted the ship to the Ahırkapı anchorage where it was safely anchored.


Previously, the maritime traffic in the Bosphorus Strait had been temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure, and it has since normal operations following the ship's securing.


Built in 2008, the Ere M has a length of 190 meters and a width of32.26 meters.
