MSC Container Ship and an Oil Tanker in Distress in Turkish Waters One After the Other

On January 3 and 4, the General Directorate of Coastal Safety (KEGM) of Turkey reported two separate incidents of failure in Turkish waters, where both vessels received towing assistance for a safe evacuation. The events did not report any injured personnel or pollution.


The first incident occurred on January3, when the Panama-flagged container ship MSC Gianna III experienced engine failure near the Kumkale area of the Dardanelles Strait. the time of the incident, the vessel was on a voyage from Gioia Tauro, Italy to Tekirdag, Turkey.


Under the coordination of theakkale Vessel Traffic Service Center (VTS) and with the assistance of a strait pilot, the container ship was towed by the tugboats Kurtarma-7 and Kurtarma-18 and safely anchored at the Karanlik Liman Port anchorage.


The second incident happened on January 4, when the Liquied Petroleum Gas tanker Bitihi 2 lost power near the island of Buyukada in the Sea of Marmara. The ship suffered a mechanical failure while sailing the Sea of Marmara, leading to a loss of propulsion from the main engine.


With the wind pushing the tanker towards the coastline of Buyukada, faced the risk of running aground near the Princes’ Islands. The Turkish Coastal Safety Directorate promptly dispatched the tugboat Kurtarma-9 to the scene, which made the disabled tanker with a towline.
