The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an emergency warning on Saturday, announcing that a low-pressure area the southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a tropical depression and is likely to develop into the first cyclonic storm of the year, 'Montha', within 48, heading straight for the Andhra Pradesh coast. Meanwhile, another low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea is also intensifying, prompting a dual storm defense mode for eastern coast of India.

The IMD noted that on Monday, October 27, the low-pressure area in the southwest Bay of Bengal officially intensified into the cyclonic storm 'Montha', subsequently heading towards the coastal areas of Machilipatnam to Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, and is expected to make land at the beginning of the week.

Port emergency response:

The ports of Chennai, Ennore (Kamarajar Port), Kattupalli, apattinam, Kudalur, Pondicherry, Karaikal, Tuticorin (VO Chidambaranar Port), and Pan have all raised a cyclone alert signal of one level. The port authorities stated: "Currently, it is safe for ships to navigate, but a 24- monitoring has been initiated, and the storm path is updated every 3 hours."

On the west coast of India, the new low-pressure system formed in the Arab Sea is moving northwest at a speed of 7 kilometers per hour. The latest model from the IMD shows that this system may intensify into a tropical storm on Sunday, although does not directly land on Indian soil, it will cause abnormally high waves on the west coast.

The Indian Ministry of Fisheries issued an emergency notice: all fishing in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and the central and western coasts are prohibited from going to sea before Monday. "The current wave height has already exceeded 3, and the risk of capsizing small fishing boats is extremely high," warned the head of the IMD's Ocean Meteorology Department.

The IMD also an orange rainstorm warning: on Monday, there will be heavy to very heavy rain (daily rainfall of 115-204 millimeters) in the three districts Tiruvallur, Chennai, and Ranipet, with some areas possibly exceeding the 250-millimeter threshold for extraordinary rainstorms. The meteorological shows that this rainfall is the superposition effect of the northeast monsoon and the peripheral circulation of the cyclone, and the impact will continue until October 28.

The Nadu Disaster Management Authority (TNDMA) has instructed all local authorities to remain vigilant, especially in coastal areas that faced flooding and wind damage during the monsoon rains week.
