Boom! Maersk CATL forge global strategy, leading the new journey of decarbonization of global supply chains

Recently, Maersk and CATL signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU), which will the two join hands to advance the decarbonization journey of global supply chains and further strengthen CATL’s global logistics footprint.


On October 9, the two held a signing ceremony in Hong Kong, attended by senior management personnel from both companies. The MoU was signed by Morten Bo Christiansen, Senior Vice President of Global Energyition, Maersk, and Li Xiaoning, Executive President of Overseas Business, CATL. Maersk Chairman Robert Maersk Uggla, CATL Chief Officer Tan Libin, and other senior leaders and representatives from both parties witnessed the moment.


This MoU builds on the five-year cooperation between Maersk and CAT, which spans across ocean, multimodal and other logistics solutions. Under the new agreement, Maersk will become CATL’s preferred global logistics partner, delivering integrated services ocean, air, project logistics, and warehousing. The two parties will also explore effective and scalable models to keep the supply chain resilient for CATL in the rapidly evolving global. Tailor-made solutions will be developed to address specific needs of different markets. These efforts are aimed at enabling excellence in the operation of CATL’s supply chain and supporting international ambitions.


Maersk and CATL will also work together to electrify key nodes of the supply chain by leveraging CATL’s advanced battery technology. This exploring the electrification of the container shipping and port ecosystems, the electrification of inland transportation and warehousing. These efforts will be supported by solutions such as power design, energy management, and recycling solutions for waste batteries. Under the agreement, CATL will be considered the preferred battery technology partner that supports Maersk’s decarbon roadmap.


Maersk has set an ambitious goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire business by 2040. While reducing greenhouse gas emissions a common goal for many companies, this collaboration will help enable this transition by co-developing scalable electrification solutions that can support a lower-carbon future for the logistics.


By combining Maersk’s global logistics network with CATL’s industry-leading energy technology, the two companies aim to co-develop scalable electrification that can set a new benchmark for logistics decarbonization and accelerate the energy transition in the industry.
