Frequent Safety Incidents! HMM Suspends Acceptance of Aricell Lithium-Ion Batteries
Logistics News
27-Aug-2024
Recently, HMM, one of Asia’s largest shipping companies, announced that it would temporarily halt the transportation of lithium-ion batteries produced by the manufacturer Aricell, following a series of safety incidents, including but not limited to lithium-ion battery explosions. This move aims to ensure navigational safety and prevent the recurrence of similar tragedies.
HMM has issued a notice to its customers, stating that effective immediately, it will suspend the acceptance and transportation of lithium-ion batteries produced by Aricell. This decision comes in response to a recent string of safety incidents involving lithium-ion batteries.
It is reported that the latest explosion incident tragically resulted in the deaths of 23 Aricell employees, with the affected container reportedly booked through HMM. To ensure navigational safety and prevent such tragedies from occurring again, HMM has decided to take decisive action by suspending the transportation of Aricell-branded lithium-ion batteries.
It is important to note that HMM emphasized in its announcement that this suspension applies only to Aricell-branded lithium-ion batteries. HMM will continue to accept and transport lithium-ion batteries from other brands according to standard procedures. Additionally, HMM specified that only brand-new lithium-ion batteries will be allowed for loading, and they must be stored in well-ventilated refrigerated containers, with no placement on the ship's deck.
As for the duration of this suspension, HMM has not disclosed specific details. However, based on past experiences, such suspensions typically do not last long, and HMM is expected to resume normal operations once the relevant investigation results are released.
There is no definitive news yet on whether other liner operators will adjust their lithium-ion battery transportation policies. However, given the recent frequency of container ship fires, some operators may tighten their regulations on lithium-ion battery shipments.
