Recent severe winter weather in northwestern Europe has led to operational disruptions at the continent's two largest, Hamburg and Rotterdam. The harsh weather conditions continue to take a toll on widespread port and inland transport activities across northern and western Europe, with snow, ice, and-zero temperatures affecting all major modes of transport – including truck, rail, and barge – leading to delays and disruptions at terminals and warehouses.
The ongoing winter have led to:
Delays and disruptions at terminals and warehouses
Traffic congestion and road closures on major roads and highways
Reduced availability of loading unloading slots
Congestion throughout the supply chain due to weather-related causes
These disruptions have affected all major ports around the northern and western mountain ranges and are to persist in the coming days.
Hapag-Lloyd Issues Update on Port Operations in Germany
The ports of Hamburg, northern France, Rotterdam, Antwerp are all experiencing slower operations, and in some cases, terminal activities may be temporarily suspended. As such, vessels and cargo transiting these locations will experience delays. Hapag-Lloyd is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with terminal operators. In addition, Hapag-Lloyd reminds that any additional costs arising from these severe weather conditions be borne by the cargo side.
Hamburg
Eurogate: All terminal operations (including water- and landside) have been completely suspended since Saturday morning, 3rd.
CTA (HHLA): Terminal operations (water- and landside) stopped Saturday morning, January 3rd. Waterside operations have since but are still significantly slowed. Rail and truck services have also resumed but at a much slower pace.
CTT (HHLA): Rail and truck transport has remained suspended Saturday morning, while terminal operations, though active, are progressing slowly.
Wilhelmshaven
Eurogate: Cargo operations are experiencing minor disruptions but full-scale outage.
Bremerhaven
Eurogate and NTB Bremerhaven: Both are reporting minor disruptions to cargo operations but no full-scale stoppages.
Port of Rotterdam
All operations at the ECT Delta terminal have been suspended until further notice, and truck drivers are advised to avoid the area the terminal.
Port of Antwerp
No major operational restrictions have been reported so far.
Snow and frosty weather conditions are expected to persist in coming days, leading to continued delays, disruptions, and operational restrictions. As such, scheduled loading and unloading appointments and closing times may not be able to be adhered to planned.
