On December 30, the cargo ship "White Line" arrived near the Turkish port of Marmara and anchored At around 14:30 local time on Saturday, the ship drifted from its anchorage and eventually ran aground on a beach near a tourist destination called Santos Pl. According to local media Sozcu, the ship encountered a strong storm.

As of Monday, the ship remained stranded in place, with the search and rescue ship "ahlisiye 12" standing guard nearby. Due to the rough seas on Sunday, it was not possible to conduct a diving inspection, but Sozcu reported that a inspection will be carried out once the seas calm.

The "White Line" is a 1985-built, 75-meter-long coastal cargo. The ship, which is owned and operated by Turkey, primarily engages in regional trade around the Mediterranean, Aegean, and Black Seas, with its route extending fromta to Port Said and then to the Kerch Strait, as shown by its Automatic Identification System (AIS) data.

The ship had numerous Port State ControlPSC) deficiencies, with over 40 new ones added in the last year alone. Since 2017, PSC inspectors have found at least one issue during every boarding inspection. Recent inspections have uncovered deficiencies in areas such as firefighting equipment, fire partitions, fire doors, engine room cleanliness, propulsion or auxiliary engines, crew spaces, crew certificates, and nautical logs.

The grounding of the "White Line" was one of two grounding incidents that occurred over the weekend along Turkeys coastline.
