DHL and CMA CGM join forces: Biofuel project accelerates new decarbonization process in maritime transport
Logistics News
25-Dec-2025
DHL Global Forwarding and CMA CGM have taken a significant step in advancing the decarbonization of global container shipping. two companies have agreed to jointly use 8,990 metric tons of second-generation biofuel (fatty acid methyl ester), which is expected to achieve reduction of approximately 25,000 metric tons of CO₂e over the entire life cycle (from fuel production to use, i.e. well-to-ake). This initiative will help DHL customers significantly reduce the carbon intensity of their international supply chains while accelerating the industry's transition to alternative marine fuels.
This collaboration is another milestone in our journey towards a low-carbon supply chain," said Casper Ellerbaek, Global Head of Ocean Freight at DHL Global Forward. "By using sustainable marine fuels, we are supporting our customers in achieving their climate targets and driving tangible progress in the decarbonization efforts."
D low-carbon shipping solutions
Through DHL's "GoGreen Plus" and CMA CGM's "ACT " low-carbon shipping programs, ippers can integrate sustainable shipping into their logistics operations. CMA CGM will actually bunker the biofuel in its fleet, ensuring the reduction matches DHL's "Bookamp; Claim" model. DHL's "GoGreen Plus" service allows customers to reduce well-to-wake emissions by choosing a sustainable marine fuel option, which reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional marine fuel.
A common pursuit of the “Net-zero” target
DHL has set its sights on net- CO2 emissions by 2050, and CMA CGM Group’s Executive Vice President for its Maritime Division, Olivier Nivoix confirmed: “Our with DHL illustrates how partnerships can accelerate the transition to low-carbon shipping. ‘ACT ’ provides reliable and scalable solutions, supported by our fleet designed for alternative fuels. C CGM is committed to reaching net-zero by 2050, has already reduced its carbon intensity for maritime activities by 57% since 2008 and is currently heavily investing in alternative fuels and dual-fuel vessels.”
The two companies will continue to explore opportunities to expand the use of low-carbon fuels develop collaborative ways to drive decarbonization along international supply chains.
What is ACT ?
For several years, CMA CGM Group been working to decarbonize its activities. Pioneering the use of biofuels and deploying LNG-powered vessels, CMA CGM is constantly optimizing its, diversifying its energy mix and supporting innovation to get as close as possible to net-zero emissions by 2050.
In response to its customers growing need for environmental performance in supply chains, CMA CGM has developed the ACT range of low-carbon transport solutions.
ACT enables customers to reduce carbon footprint of the transport of their goods by 10%, 25%, 50%, even up to 83%, based on the life, by using low-carbon fuels such as 2nd Generation Biofuels, further complemented by a carbon offsetting solution.
What is GoGreen?
DHL’s GoGreen Plus product provides a decarbonization solution for the core business of DHL by leveraging sustainable fuels and low-carbon technologies Built on a true value chain decarbonization approach, GoGreen Plus allows DHL to substitute fossil fuels with sustainable fuels within its Logistics company network and allocate environmental benefits to customers, even when their goods are not physically transported on assets using these fuels. GoGreen Plus helps DHL customers reduce indirect Scope 3 emissions from upstream and downstream transport and in their value chain. It also helps customers voluntarily report on greenhouse gas emissions and progress towards decarbonization targets
