According to the Sri Lanka Disaster Management Center, the recent disaster situation in the country is severe due to the extreme weather caused by cyclone "Ditaw", which has resulted in over 600 deaths, affected more than 2 million people, and caused more than 4,000 to be completely destroyed and more than 60,000 houses to be partially damaged.

Sources from the shipping industry reported that operations at the Port of Colbo in Sri Lanka are recovering following the temporary closure caused by the cyclone, but congestion and vessel delays are still ongoing.

The productivity of the terminals is still normal levels due to the backlog of vessels and containers that had accumulated during the closure caused by the weather. Warehouses and terminals are currently processing the backlog of cargo. Several are said to be waiting at anchor, while schedule delays are affecting regional feeder and mainline services.

Currently, port operators have resumed operations but prioritizing safety, the repositioning of equipment, and the reorganization of the yard, resulting in a slow recovery of capacity. Severe sea conditions after the cyclone also caused delays in calling at the port.

Shipping companies have informed customers to expect longer stays and possible delays as recovery work continues.

As a key transshipment hub in South, the Port of Colombo handles a significant volume of cargo to and from the Indian subcontinent, and any disruption has a magnified effect on the supply chains in the.

Industry officials stated that it may take days to return to normal, depending on the weather conditions and the rate at which the backlog of work is cleared
