CMA CGM steps in to ease congestion at Indias largest container port!

CMA CGM’s Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal (NSFT) has implemented a range of measures to address the long-standing truck congestion issues at India’s largest container gateway, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPA).
Terminal, operated by CMA CGM’s terminal business unit in a joint venture with the JM Baxi Group, has been grappling with pressures stemming from fluctuating arrivals, extended gate queuing times, and inland transportation bottlenecks, which have impacted cargo evacuation and delivery schedules. Given that Nhava Sheva handles a significant portion India’s containerized trade, congestion at the terminal has had a ripple effect across the entire supply chain.
According to industry sources, NSFT is focusing on enhancing operations efficiency, streamlining truck handling processes, and optimizing yard operations to stabilize truck turnaround times. Specific measures include intensified coordination with transport operators, optimized slot management, and enhanced to deal with peak-hour traffic flows more efficiently.

With this momentum, the total cargo handled in FY2024-25 expected to exceed 7 million TEUs, setting a new record for the port.
Furthermore, the pressure may intensify in the short term as PSA Mumbai’ (BMCT) second-phase expansion, which will add 2.4 million TEUs of handling capacity, comes online next month. Once operational, the expansion will significantly boost handling, thereby making it crucial to improve landside connectivity to maintain port efficiency.
The measures come as port users and regulators step up scrutiny amid concerns that congestion issues threaten vessel, container dwell time, and overall logistics costs. Continuous coordination among terminal operators, port authorities, customs, and inland logistics providers is essential to ensure the smooth flow of goods industry-related sources said.
As India’s containerized trade continues to grow, and Nhava Sheva remains a key gateway for imports and exports, the efforts ease landside congestion are seen as critical in maintaining the reliability and competitiveness of the country’s maritime supply chains
