On October 16th local time, a boat carrying 21 crew members to transfer personnel to the oil tanker Sea Quest capsized unknown reasons in the outer anchorage of the port of Beira, Mozambique.
The Maritime Rescue and Coordination Center in Mozambique issued an alert to vessels, and maritime rescue personnel and crew members from nearby benevolent vessels rescued 14 people from the water. Seven people are still missing, including five sailors who were originally scheduled board the Sea Quest and one technician and one crew member from the now capsized vessel.
Three of the rescued individuals are receiving medical care aboard the Sea Quest.
Scorpio Marine Management, the operator of the Sea Quest, has responded and stated that they are in contact with the families of the crew members.
The Sea Quest built in 2012, is a 49,990 DWT oil tanker that was sold to its current owner in 2024. A signals show that the ship is from the UAE and has been anchored in the anchorage since last weekend.
