Atlas Air Cargo Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Ecuador Due to Engine Failure
On the afternoon of June 12 (local time), an Atlas Air cargo aircraft en route from Quito, the capital of Ecuador, to Miami was forced to make an emergency landing in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city, due to an in-flight emergency.
The Boeing 747-47UF had declared an emergency shortly after takeoff from Quito due to an engine malfunction and landed safely at Guayaquil Airport. The incident caused delays for other arriving flights at the airport.
Emergency services reported that the aircraft remained on the runway awaiting towing after landing.
This is not the first such incident involving Atlas Air. On the evening of January 18, 2024 (local time), another Atlas Air Boeing 747-8 cargo plane made an emergency return to Miami International Airport shortly after takeoff due to engine failure. At the time, five crew members were on board. The airline confirmed there were no injuries and an investigation into the cause was launched.
Founded in April 1992, Atlas Air is a U.S.-based cargo airline headquartered in New York. Its main operating hubs include Miami International Airport, New York JFK Airport, and Los Angeles International Airport.
