China-Laos Railway Hits 60 Million Tons Milestone, Boosts Regional Trade Efficiency
Logistics News
23-May-2025
As of May 22, the China-Laos Railway has transported over 60 million tons of cargo since its launch, including more than 13.9 million tons of cross-border freight, marking it as a vital trade artery connecting China with Laos and broader ASEAN markets.
Between January 1 and May 22 this year alone, over 9.9 million tons of cargo were moved—2.3 million tons cross-border. Exports of Yunnan-grown produce like apples and potatoes continue to rise in popularity across Southeast Asia.
The railway now facilitates trade in over 3,000 product types, including Laos' minerals and rubber, Thailand's tropical fruits, and China's electronics and high-tech goods. This two-way logistics corridor accelerates regional economic integration and industrial upgrading.
Enhanced by services like the "Lancang-Mekong Express" and new cold-chain rail routes, fresh goods such as durians and mangosteens are being delivered faster and fresher than ever before. More than 2,000 trains have operated on this route to date.
Looking forward, the China-Laos Railway will expand into cold-chain logistics, cross-border e-commerce, and integrated “railway + industrial park” models, establishing Kunming as a logistics hub to deepen China-ASEAN trade cooperation.
