Gothenburg Port Sees 15% Surge in Imports; Exports Slightly Decline as Rail Transport Gains Momentum

In 2024, the Port of Gothenburg handled 909,000 TEUs of container cargo, a slight 1% decrease from the previous year. Despite this decline, the port’s overall container volume in 2024 remained above the record-breaking levels of 2023. This seemingly paradoxical situation stems from the port handling more loaded containers while significantly reducing empty container movements, leading to an overall increase in cargo handling despite the decrease in total container count.

The port witnessed a remarkable 15% growth in imports in 2024, while exports saw a slight decline. This shift has brought the import-export ratio closer to an even 50-50 balance, a key factor in reducing empty container demand, improving supply chain efficiency, cutting costs, and minimizing environmental impact.

Rail transport at the Port of Gothenburg also experienced significant growth in 2024, with container rail volumes rising by 7% to reach 500,000 TEUs, marking the second-busiest year for rail transport at the port. This growth was primarily driven by major import-oriented rail destinations such as Falköping and Nässjö, as well as the launch of new rail shuttle services to northern Sweden. Currently, over 60% of container transport between the port and its hinterland is conducted via rail.

Although the European economy has impacted RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) cargo volumes at many ports, Gothenburg’s RoRo traffic saw only a modest 3% decline. Notably, the port’s largest RoRo terminal, the Gothenburg RoRo Terminal, bucked the trend with increased cargo volumes in 2024. The terminal plays a vital role in connecting key logistics hubs in Belgium and the UK.

2024 presented both challenges and opportunities for the Port of Gothenburg. While overall container throughput slightly declined, the significant surge in imports and the expansion of rail transport created new growth opportunities. Meanwhile, the port’s efforts to balance imports and exports have contributed to global supply chain stability. Looking ahead, the Port of Gothenburg will continue optimizing its logistics network and enhancing transport efficiency to meet evolving market demands.
