On December 29, 2024, HMM's container ship HMM Tacoma reported a fire in a container cargo hold near Mozambique, and the ship has been anchored in South African waters for the past two weeks.
Ship tracking data from S&P Global shows that the 6,350 TEU container ship HMM Tacoma, built in 2009, has been anchored near Ngqura, South Africa since January 5.
According to a spokesperson from HMM, on December 29, 2024, smoke was detected in one of the container holds while the ship was en route to Mozambique from India's Mundra.
The HMM Tacoma is deployed on HMM's Far East-India-Latin America (FIL) route. Since September 2023, the ship has been using biofuel provided by South Korean refiner GS Caltex. On January 2, South Korean authorities were notified of the incident, and the maritime court is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
A spokesperson for HMM said, "The fire was quickly extinguished with carbon dioxide. In accordance with our procedures, some containers were unloaded at the COEGA port in South Africa. Once the carbon dioxide is replenished, the ship will resume its voyage as originally scheduled. The fire did not affect the operation of the vessel, and we have notified the shippers of this incident."
