Two vessels from the world's third-biggest container shipping line, CMA CGM, have passed through the S Canal, the waterway's manager said on Tuesday, a sign that the shipping disruptions related to the Gaza war may be easing.

The Suez Canal is the route between Asia and Europe but since November 2023, shippers have had to choose longer routes after Houthi rebels in Yemen attacked merchant vessels, saying they were Palestinians during the Gaza war.

CMA CGM had made limited crossings of the Suez Canal before the Suez Canal Authority's announcement on Tuesday, when safe conditions.

There have been no reports of Houthi attacks on vessels since a fragile ceasefire took effect in Gaza on Oct. 10, even as companies remain cautious allowing shippers to reconsider using the Suez Canal, which Egypt regards as a major source of foreign currency.

The Suez Canal Authority said on Tuesday the CMA CGA's Jacques Saade transited north to south, while the CMA CGM Adonis went south to north.

The CMA CGM Jacques Sa, named after the shipping line's founder, operates on the Asia-North Europe trade lane, while the CMA CGM Adonis runs the Asia-Mediterranean lane, according to the company's website.

French company CMA CGM will use the route to launch its India-U.S. INDAMEX service from., according to a schedule published on its website.

On Friday, Maersk said one of its vessels had made its first voyage through the Red Sea and the Bab-Mandeb strait between Yemen and the Horn of Africa in nearly two years.

The Danish shipping giant said, however, that there were no clear plans for a reopening of the route, but that it would take a "phased approach to gradually resume sailing."
