According to Reuters, the Swedish customs department said on Sunday that authorities had boarded a Russian cargo ship that had anchored in Swedish waters Friday due to an engine failure and were inspecting its cargo.

The "Adler" (IMO 9179854) had just completed its exit voyage the Oresund and entered the Kattegat Strait early Saturday when the crew reported a mechanical failure. Automatic Identification System (AIS) data provided by Pole Global showed that the ship anchored along the coast of the Kullen Peninsula, near the town of Nyhamnslage, after sending a distress signal.

"A little after1 a.m. last night, we boarded the vessel with the support of the Swedish Coast Guard and the police department to conduct a customs inspection. The inspection is ongoing, said Martin Hoglund, a spokesperson for the customs department.

But the spokesperson declined to disclose the specific results of the customs department's inspection.

In addition the "Adler" being on the EU sanctions list, the ship and its owner, M Leasing LLC, are both subject to U.S. sanctions for suspected involvement in shipments, according to the OpenSanctions database of companies and individuals targeted by sanctions, priority targets, and government watchlists.

Martin Hoglund said the ship departed from port of St. Petersburg, Russia, on December 15, but he said the customs department did not have any information on its destination.

At present, the ship been detained. "Without the approval of the prosecutor, the ship may not continue to sail," Martin Hoglund, press secretary of the Swedish Customs, told Swedish National TelevisionSVT).
