The water levels of the Amazon River have continued to decrease over the past few weeks, leading to restrictions on sea freight transportation. Cargo shipments entering and leaving the Port of Manaus, Brazil, are typically subject to draft restrictions.

According to a report from French shipping giant CMA CGM, water level analysis indicates that navigation restrictions may begin in week 42 and could last until week 52. As a result, CMA CGM announced the implementation of a Low Water Surcharge (LWS) starting September 1st to ensure business continuity at the port.

Similarly, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd have also announced the introduction of relevant surcharges.

Maersk further predicts that the severity of the river drought may lead to the closure of navigation routes between weeks 44 and 46.
