According to local Indian media, the cargo vessel Wan Hai 503 continues to emit light smoke from its burned-out cargo hold, although the ship remains stable and is currently anchored near the edge of India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
A fire reignited on Friday, but salvage crews quickly moved in to suppress the flames as wind and sea conditions allowed. The fire is now under control, and thermal imaging devices are being used to monitor the temperature inside the cargo hold.
Rescue tugboats SCI Panna and Advantis Virgo remain on-site, providing boundary cooling and firefighting support. The tug Offshore Warrior continues towing operations, while the tug Saksham is expected to rejoin the efforts after a crew change.
Dewatering operations are ongoing to address a previous issue with flooding. A malfunctioning hydraulic power unit has been restored, and as of Saturday, the salvage team had reduced the engine room’s water level to about six feet. They aim to lower it further to identify the source of the ingress.
Authorities are still assessing possible refuge ports. While initial plans considered relocating the vessel to a port in Sri Lanka, reports now indicate alternative African ports are being evaluated.
