At a pivotal moment in the global shipping industry's transition toward green and low-carbon development, a highly anticipated signing ceremony was held on June 30.

COSCO Shipping Bulk and BHP officially signed a charter agreement for two 210,000-ton dual-fuel ammonia vessels. Lin Ji, Deputy General Manager of COSCO Shipping Group, attended the ceremony and witnessed the signing. Emma Roberts, Vice President of Shipping at BHP, and Chen Xinchuan, Director and General Manager of COSCO Shipping Bulk, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective companies.

Today, the global shipping industry faces numerous challenges, with improving supply chain efficiency and transitioning to green, low-carbon operations becoming urgent priorities. This collaboration between COSCO Shipping Group and BHP is a strong response to these industry challenges. It also marks a landmark step in the development of the Australia–China Green Shipping Corridor, setting a benchmark for bilateral cooperation in sustainable maritime transportation. As a key global pilot project for green shipping, the corridor aims to reduce carbon emissions through technological innovation and collaborative models, contributing to the sustainable development of the industry.

The two ammonia dual-fuel bulk carriers covered by the agreement are being hailed as “green giants” of the shipping world. Scheduled for delivery in 2028, they will primarily be used to transport iron ore from Western Australia to Northeast Asia. Their standout feature is their outstanding environmental performance—capable of reducing carbon emissions per voyage by 50% to 95% compared to conventional fossil-fuel vessels.

As the world moves toward sustainable development, the shipping industry bears a significant responsibility. The partnership between COSCO Shipping Bulk and BHP serves as a model for the global maritime sector's green transition.
