According to Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, the car carrier "Morning Midas" was abandoned in the central Pacific Ocean after catching fire on Tuesday, carrying cars from several Chinese automakers.

The "Morning Midas" delivered approximately 3,000 vehicles to Mexico from several automakers such as Chery Automobile Co. And Great Wall Motor Co. Insiders said it is still unclear which brand of electric vehicle caught fire.

It was reported that around 14:00 local time on June 3rd, smoke emerged from a car deck on the ship. According to the United States Coast Guard, there were a total of 3,048 vehicles on board, including 70 all-electric and 681 hybrid (partially electric) vehicles. Due to the severity of the fire and considering the safety of the crew, it was decided to abandon the ship. Twenty-two crew members boarded one of the lifeboats and were rescued by the container ship Cosco Hellas, which was diverted to the scene.

Recent photos taken by the US Coast Guard show that the vessel is still burning and emitting smoke, and no pollution has been observed so far.

Zodiac Maritime, the management company to which the "Morning Midas" belongs, has assigned the rescue company Resolve Marine to handle the ship's fire. However, the "Morning Midas" is located 300 miles southwest of Adakh Island, Alaska. It will take several days for the rescue tugboat to reach the accident vessel. The first tugboat has been mobilized, carrying a salvage expert team and specialized equipment, and is expected to arrive at the site around June 9th. Upon arrival, it will assess the condition of the vessel and provide necessary support. "An additional fire-fighting tugboat with sea towing capabilities has also been arranged to provide further support," Zodiac said.
